Walk (or bike, or bus) it out

Most Americans still rely solely on automobiles as their mode of transportation, so it's as important as ever to to preach alternative methods of getting around -- methods that are benefical for ourselves and our environment.

Bikes, of course, are a popular choice. According to bikeleague.org, a 180 pound person burns up to 450 calories pedaling 14 miles per hour, and riding your bike a mere four miles keeps 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air (WorldWatch Institute).

Or how about strapping on some rollerblades? They're not just for Venice Beach anymore!

And don't forget that oldie-but-goodie: walking.

But if you just can't live without the automobile, carpooling is increasingly popular -- and pretty convenient, too. There are many resources to help people meet and share their cars, thereby reducing their drive time and fuel costs.

So, for those who are concerned about personal and planetary health, the alternatives are there.
